Lecture series: Caught Up in the Clash of Civilizations, Jewish Culture between East and West
4 evenings in De Balie (in February, March, April and May 2010)
Whereas Jews were classically perceived as epitomizing the Orient (as Semites), in recent years they are being associated more and more with the West (as integral part of a Judeo-Christian culture of the West). Therefore Jewish History offers an interesting perspective on the debate surrounding what has been called ‘The Clash Of Civilizations’: the question of how civilizations, in particular East and West meet, the dangers that are involved and the opportunities it offers. In this lecture series distinguished international scholars will contribute to the debate on these issues, discussing the interplay of East and West in Jewish History
